Tehachapi, Calif. Nov. 23, 2018– As the weather cools down and Tehachapi residents turn to their fireplaces to keep warm, Waste Management asks for the community’s help in preventing cart and truck fires by disposing of ashes properly.

"Ashes from the fireplace that appear to be cooled can still start a fire in the cart or collection truck and create an unsafe situation for all around,” said Josh Mann, municipal and community relations manager for Waste Management in Tehachapi. “That is why we are asking community members to follow safe disposal practices in order to keep their loved ones and our drivers safe this holiday season.”

Residents are asked to observe the following:

-Always cool ashes for several days in the chimney or fireplace

-Once cooled, place ashes in a metal container with a tight lid before placing in trash container and never in your recycling or green waste cart

-Never place ashes in plastic, paper or wood containers
