The Tehachapi Police Department will be holding a press conference on May 24, 2016, at 1:00 PM at 311 West C Street. The purpose of the press conference is to demonstrate the effectiveness of a new product for securing vacant and abandoned buildings. The new product, provided by SecureView USA, is a shatter-resistant polycarbonate that will be used in place of plywood which is commonly used to secure vacant and abandoned buildings.

By using this clear polycarbonate, the city hopes to not only decrease the blight caused by abandoned properties, but also increase public safety by making the buildings less appealing to criminals.

Chief Kroeger states “Boarded up buildings are a magnet for crime because they provide concealment for numerous types of criminal activity. By securing buildings with something that looks similar to glass windows, we are able not only reduce criminal activity, we are also able to improve the appearance of the neighborhood as we work to permanently correct the problems with the building.”

The City of Tehachapi intends to amend their approved board-up standards not only for abatements conducted by the city but also for any property that is boarded up within the city.
